TAJMAHAL is an ivory white marble mausoleum on the bank of the Yamuna river in the city of Agra.Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643,but the complete construction work was completed around after 10 years i.e. 1653.

Entry to the TAJMAHAL complex via the forecourt, which in the sixteenth century housed shops,and through a monumental gate of inlaid and highly decorated red sandstone made for a first impression of grand splendor and symmetry.

Shah Jahan was the fifth ruler of the Mughal dynasty. During his third regnal year, his favorite wife, known as Mumtaz mahal died due to complications arising from the birth of their fourteenth child. Deeply saddened ,the emperor started planning the construction of a suitable, permanent resting place for his beloved wife almost immediately.

The Base structure is a large multi chambered cube with chamfered corners forming and unequal 8 sided structure.Each side of iwan (an arch shaped doorway)is with huge pishtaq or vaulted archway with two similarly shaped balconies stacked on either side.

Four minarets frame the tomb ,one at each of the plinth facing the chamfered corners. The main chamber houses the false sarcophagi of mumtaz mahal and shah jahan, the actual graves are at lower level.

The exterior decoration are among the finest in Mughal architecture. The decorative elements were created by applying by applying paint, stucco, stone carvings .Throughout the complex  are passages from quran that comprise some of the decorative elements. The passages were chosen by amanat khan.

The TAJMAHAL was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983 for being “the jewel of muslim art in india and one of the universally admired master pieces of the world heritage. TAJMAHAL attracts 7-8 millions visitors a year. In 2007 it was declared winner of the NEW7WONDERS OF THE WORLD initiative.
